A visit that will take you on a journey through time, from the cafes with gatherings, from the bustling cinemas and theaters to the bookstores where the modern and alternative cultural life of the city is concentrated. Gijón/Xixón is a city of theaters, of cafés, of gatherings, of bookstores and books, and therefore of culture. At the end of the 19th century it is a city in expansion, which becomes an industrial and tourist center. It begins to experience a demographic increase, which modifies the social structure of the city with the consequent spatial impact on its urban structure. In this urban space, cafés, theaters, and different societies gradually appeared, which became the ideal places to hold literary and political gatherings, cultural shows and all kinds of recreational activities that invited socializing. The economic and demographic growth made possible urban changes and improvements in the city. Architectures linked to the wealthy sectors of the population began to emerge. The construction of many of its most emblematic buildings took place at this time. With the tertiarization of the main arteries of the city, the bourgeoisie began to locate their homes, professional offices, commercial premises, cafes, restaurants and recreational centers.
